Chemistry 06:Intramolecular Forces

Do you know how atoms are connected to form molecules? In this content, we will look at ways atoms bond, including ionic, covalent bonding, and bond polarity.

Activities:

I.  Ionic Bonding:

  • Review the concept of ionic bonding by drawing out lewis symbols of Na and Cl to explain ionic bond in NaCl.
  • Students may draw out lewis symbol of each element to understand how they are ionically bonded in each molecule.

II. Covalent Bonding:

  • Explain the concept of covalent bond by drawing out lewis structure of each molecule.
  • Explain how single, double, and triple bond works by drawing out lewis structures of each molecule.
  • Students may draw out lewis symbol of each element to understand how they are covalently bonded in each molecule.

III. Bond Polarity:

  • Explain the concept of bond polarity and draw out the difference between nonpolar covalent and covalent bonds.
  • Show the relationship of electronegativity with nonpolar covalent, polar covalent, and ionic bond.
  • 💡 Originals Content Tip: Use the “polls” feature and ask students to input their answers to the problems. Then, view and discuss the class result.
