IB History Skills
OVERVIEW
Using the OPCVL framework as a foundation, students will learn to critically analyze historical sources and evaluate their value and limitations. They will compare multiple sources, practice applying IB command terms, and use the PEAL structure to build well-reasoned historical arguments -- developing the critical thinking and writing skills essential to academic history.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to:
- Apply the OPCVL framework to analyze the origin, purpose, and content of historical sources, and assess their value and limitations.
- Identify similarities and differences across historical sources and explore multiple perspectives.
- Learn to use IB command terms to accurately interpret and respond to historical questions.
- Construct a structured historical argument and conclusion using the PEAL writing framework.
ACTIVITIES AND INSTRUCTION
- OPCVL Source Analysis: Have students analyze a historical source by examining its origin, purpose, and content. Guide them to evaluate the source's academic value and limitations.
- Comparing and Contrasting Sources: Have students read Source A and Source B and identify the similarities and differences between the two perspectives. Ask them to record their observations in the corresponding template sections.
- IB Command Terms: Have students select the appropriate IB command term from the word bank, then practice interpreting and answering a historical question. Emphasize that each term carries a distinct requirement that must guide their response.
- PEAL Historical Essay Writing: Have students establish a thesis statement and conclusion, then use the PEAL framework to construct a persuasive body paragraph. Challenge them to connect their evidence and analysis back to the overall argument.
