Chemistry 02:Atomic Structure
Have you ever wondered what goes on inside an atom? In this content activity, we will look beyond matter and into the world of subatomic particles – protons, neutrons, and electrons – their discovery, properties, and variations that make up each element.
Activities:
I. Atomic Theory History:
- View the video on the discovery of protons, neutrons, and electrons
- 💡 Originals Content Tip: Teachers/students may click on the figures to open a link that goes into more details of each historical figure.
II. Protons, Neutrons, and Electrons:
- Introduce protons, neutrons, and electrons, their charges, and mass
- Explain how the meanings behind the numbers shown on the periodic table and symbol
- Activity: Search the periodic table for calcium, write down its properties and symbol, and draw it out.
III. Isotopes, mass number, and atomic weight:
- Explain the concept of isotopes
- Explain the difference between Mass Number and Atomic Weight
- PhET Activity: Follow the instructions on the next page and screenshot your results.
IV. Electron Shells:
- Introduce the Bohr model and Lewis Diagram
- Activity: Fill out the Bohr model and Lewis Diagram by referencing the periodic table.
V. Ions & Ionic Compound:
- Explain the concept of ions, cation, and anion.
- Look at how NaCl is formed.
- 💡 Originals Content Tip: Use the “pop quiz” feature and ask students to “throw” in their answers to the problems.
- PhET Activity: Follow the instructions on the next 2 pages and screenshot your results.
