Chemistry 05:Chemical Formula
Do you know that there are many ways to represent atoms and molecules? In this content activity, students will look at ways to present molecules, and practice writing molecular and empirical formulas.
Activities:
I. Chemical Formula
- Introduce what chemical formula is and explain what the subscript means by writing the number of atoms for each molecule.
- Students may practice and test their understanding by writing down the number of atoms of each example molecule.
II. Diatomic Molecule
- Explain the 7 diatomic molecules, their state of matter, and the mnemonic device to memorize these molecules.
III. Molecular and Empirical Formula
- Explain molecular, empirical, and structural formulas by writing down and drawing the formulas of each example molecule.
- Students may practice and test their understanding by writing down the empirical formula of each example molecule.
IV. Picturing Molecules
- Show other ways to present molecules.
V. Drag and Drop
- Students may test their understanding by dragging the molecules to the right box.
