Multiplication 01 : Foundations for Multiplication

OVERVIEW

This content introduces students to the fundamental concepts of multiplication. They will learn the meaning of multiplication by visualizing repeated addition using images and number lines. Through this exploration, students will become familiar with multiplication operations and understand the reading of multiplication equations.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will be able to:

• Analyze problems and apply mathematical concepts to solve real-world challenges.
• Use addition to find the total number of objects arranged in rectangular arrays with up to 5 rows and up to 5 columns. (CCSS)
• Write an equation to express the total as a sum of equal addends. (CCSS)

ACTIVITIES AND INSTRUCTION

• Multimedia Learning: Improve students' understanding of the concept of multiplication through an Originals animation. At the end of the video, assign a quiz and check students’ comprehension immediately using ClassSwift.
• Multimedia Learning: Enhance students' understanding of reading multiplication equations aloud through an Originals animation. After watching, administer an audio response quiz to assess comprehension using ClassSwift.
• Multiplying Activity 1: Have students take a screenshot of a card with an apple image. Guide them in writing the corresponding multiplication equation based on the number of apples.
• Multiplying Activity 2: Have students screenshot a card with a multiplication problem. Guide them in using a number line to represent the repeated addition involved in multiplication and find the product.
• Jeopardy: Divide the class into two teams. Have teams take turns drawing question cards and answering multiplication problems. Award points for correct answers. The team with the highest points at the end wins.
