Multiplication 05 : Properties of Multiplication
OVERVIEW
This content enables students to grasp the three fundamental properties of multiplication: the commutative, distributive, and associative properties. Through understanding and applying these properties, students will gain the ability to efficiently calculate more complex multiplication problems.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to:
- Identify and understand the commutative, associative, and distributive properties of multiplication.
- Apply multiplication skills and problem-solving strategies.
- Apply properties of operations as strategies to multiply. (CCSS)
ACTIVITIES AND INSTRUCTION
- Multimedia Learning: Improve students' understanding of the three fundamental properties of multiplication through an Originals animation. At the end of the video, assign a quiz and check students’ comprehension immediately using Class Swift.
- Matching Multiplication Properties: Provide students with a matching activity where they must correctly pair the name of each multiplication property (commutative, associative, distributive) with its corresponding example.
- Commutative property of Multiplication: Have students roll two dice to generate two numbers. Use the objects to create two different arrangements representing the multiplication problem.
- Associative Property of Multiplication: Provide students with a set of objects. Demonstrate the associative property by grouping the objects in different ways to solve a multiplication problem.
- Distributive Property of Multiplication: Present students with equations involving the distributive property. Guide them in using the distributive property to find the missing numbers.
- Multiplication Maze: Provide students with a maze where each path requires solving a multiplication problem. Guide them in calculating the answers to determine the correct path to the finish line.
