Multiplication 03 : Patterns in Multiplication

OVERVIEW

This content delves into the world of multiplication, focusing on the patterns of odd and even numbers within the 10x10 times table. Students will learn effective strategies like using multiplication tables and skip counting to quickly solve multiplication problems.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will be able to:

  • Develop fluency in skip counting by odd and even numbers.
  • Identify arithmetic patterns (including patterns in the multiplication table), and explain them using properties of operations. (CCSS)

ACTIVITIES AND INSTRUCTION

  • Multimedia Learning: Improve students' understanding of the patterns in multiplication through an Originals animation. At the end of the video, assign a quiz and check students’ comprehension immediately using Class Swift.
  • Odd and Even Skip Counting: Guide students in skip counting by 2s, 4s, 6s, etc. (even numbers) and 1, 3, 5, 7, etc. (odd numbers). Use number lines to visualize the patterns and connect skip counting to multiplication.
  • Times Table Skip Counting: Present students with a 10x10 times table. Guide them in using the table to practice skip counting by different multiples. Provide sequences of numbers containing missing values. Have students use the times table to identify the missing numbers and fill in the blanks.
  • Skip Counting Race: Divide the class into two teams. Provide each team with a number chart. Assign each team a set of numbers to skip count by. Each team member will work on their own chart, connecting the numbers in their assigned skip counting sequence. The first team to complete their sequence is the winner.
  • Multiplication Mosaic Finches: Provide students with a multiplication mosaic picture. Have them solve the multiplication problems and color the corresponding sections of the picture. The completed mosaic will reveal a colorful image.
