Immersive Reader

Use the Immersive Reader feature to improve reading comprehension. This tool allows educators to tailor the reading experience to individual student needs.



Launch Immersive Reader

To start using the Immersive Reader feature, perform the following steps:


  1. Use the Text tool to add text into the canvas. 
    This could be via keyboard, pen, or voice. 

  2. Switch to the Select tool.

  3. Click the text block that you want to use. 
    The adorning menu appears. 

  4. On the adorning menu, click the Immersive Reader


A new Immersive Reader window should open.

  • Users subscribed with a Pro plan 
  • Users under an Entity account

Customize reader settings

Once inside the Immersive Reader, you'll find various settings to customize your view and interaction with the text. These are typically organized into several categories:


Text Preferences
Options to adjust how the text looks on the Immersive Reader window.
 
  • Text Size
    Adjust the size of the text to make it more comfortable to read.
  • Text Spacing
    Increase or decrease the spacing between letters, words, and lines to reduce visual crowding.
  • Font Style
    Change the font to one that is easier for you to read.
  • Background Color (Page Themes): 
    Select from various background and text color combinations (themes) to reduce eye strain or assist with conditions like dyslexia.
     
Grammar Options
Enhancements that assist in teaching grammar and parts of speech. 
 
  • Syllables
    Break words into syllables to help with word recognition and pronunciation.
  • Parts of Speech Highlighting
    Turn on highlighting for different parts of speech to aid in grammar analysis. You can usually choose to highlight:
    • Nouns
    • Verbs
    • Adjectives
    • Adverbs
  • Customizable Colors
    Choose the specific colors used for highlighting different parts of speech.
  • Show Labels
    Display labels (e.g., "N" for Noun) above the highlighted words.

Reading Preferences
Options to facilitate ease of reading and understanding.
  • Line Focus
    Narrows the focus of your reading to one, three, or five lines at a time, minimizing distractions. Use up/down arrows to move the focus.
  • Picture Dictionary
    When enabled, you can click on many individual words to see a visual representation (picture) of their meaning, along with hearing the word pronounced.
  • Translate
    Select one of the following:
    • Word Translation: Click on a single word to translate it into a chosen language.
    • Document Translation: Translate the entire document into over 60 different languages. You can easily toggle between the original and translated versions.

Read Aloud Controls
Options to trigger the read process and for adjusting how the text is read.
 
  • Play/Pause
    Start or pause the text being read aloud.
  • Reading Speed
    Adjust how fast or slow the text is read.
  • Voice Selection
    Choose between a male or female voice for the narration.



Recommendations

  • Experiment: Try different settings to find what works best for your reading style and needs.
  • Combine Features: Use a combination of features like line focus, text spacing, and read aloud for a truly personalized experience.
  • Practice: The more you use Immersive Reader, the more comfortable you'll become with its powerful features.
