Fractions 06 : Multiplying Fractions part 1

OVERVIEW

This content allows students to learn how to multiply a fraction by a whole number. We provided 1 animation, 4 activities and 1 exit ticket in this content, all of them are multimedia-based. Teachers can keep their original lecture files while integrating with our content to create an interactive learning environment.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will be able to:

  • Apply multiplication of fractions to real-life contexts.
  • Apply and extend previous understandings of multiplication to multiply a fraction by a whole number. (CCSS)
  • Understand a fraction a/b as a multiple of 1/b. (CCSS)
  • Understand a multiple of a/b as a multiple of 1/b, and use this understanding to multiply a fraction by a whole number. (CCSS)
  • Solve word problems involving multiplication of a fraction by a whole number, e.g., by using visual fraction models and equations to represent the problem. (CCSS)

ACTIVITIES AND INSTRUCTION

  • Multimedia Learning: Improve students' understanding of multiplying fractions by a whole number through an Originals animation. At the end of the video, assign a quiz and check students’ comprehension immediately using Class Swift.
  • Multiplying Fractions Activity 1: Present students with multiplication problems involving fractions through a gif.
  • Real-world Application 1: Provide students with recipes that include fractional measurements. Guide them in scaling the recipe up or down by multiplying the ingredient amounts.
  • Real-world Application 2: Present students with word problems that require multiplication of fractions. Guide them in identifying the necessary information and setting up the multiplication equation.
  •  Multiplying Fractions Activity 2: Provide students with a maze where each path requires multiplying two fractions. Guide students in correctly multiplying the fractions to determine the correct path to the finish line.
  • Bingo: Divide the class into two teams. Conduct a rock-paper-scissors match to determine which team chooses a bingo grid. The chosen team selects a grid and answers the corresponding multiplication problem. If correct, the team places a star on the grid. If incorrect, the other team can answer. The first team to connect two lines vertically, horizontally, or diagonally wins the game.
