Entity
Fractions 07 : Fractions to Decimals
OVERVIEW
This content allows students to learn how to convert fractions and decimals. We provided 1 animation, 4 activities and 1 exit ticket in this content, all of them are multimedia-based. Teachers can keep their original lecture files while integrating with our content to create an interactive learning environment.
LEARNING OBJECTIVE
Students will be able to:
- Build fluency in converting between fractions and decimals.
- Understand that fractions and decimals are equivalent representations of parts of a whole and be able to convert between the two forms.
- Use visual models to compare the values of numbers, including decimals and fractions.
- Combine fraction addition with decimal conversion.
- Express a fraction with denominator 10 as an equivalent fraction with denominator 100, and use this technique to add two fractions with respective denominators 10 and 100. (CCSM)
- Use decimal notation for fractions with denominators 10 or 100. (CCSM)
- Compare two decimals to hundredths by reasoning about their size. (CCSM)
ACTIVITIES AND INSTRUCTION
- Multimedia Learning: Improve students' understanding of converting fractions to decimals through an Originals animation. At the end of the video, assign a quiz and check students’ comprehension immediately using Class Swift.
- Fractions to Decimals Activity 1: Provide students with various fractions. Guide them in converting these fractions to decimals and plotting them accurately on a number line.
- Fractions to Decimals Activity 2: Present students with a series of fractions and decimals. Have them practice converting between the two forms.
- Comparing Fractions and Decimals: Present students with pairs of fractions or decimals. Guide them in comparing the numbers and determining which is greater or lesser.
- Fractions to Decimals Activity 3: Provide students with addition problems where one fraction has a denominator of ten and the other has a denominator of hundred. Guide them in adding the fractions and then converting the sum to a decimal.
- Collect stars: Divide the class into two teams. Conduct a rock-paper-scissors match to determine the starting team. Prepare a set of questions covering fraction to decimal conversion, comparison, and addition. Award stars to the team that correctly answers each question. The team with the most stars at the end wins.
