Fractions 03:Comparing Fractions-Part 1
OVERVIEW
This content allows students to learn how to compare fractions with the same denominator or numerator. We provided 2 animations and 5 activities in this content, all of them are multimedia-based. Teachers can keep their original lecture files while integrating with our content to create an interactive learning environment.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to:
- Engage with manipulatives and visual representations to deepen their understanding of numerators and denominators.
- Use visual models to compare fractions with the same numerator or denominator.
- Explore and solve problems independently to apply their understanding of fractions.
- Understand two fractions as equivalent (equal) if they are the same size, or the same point on a number line. (CCSS)
- Recognize and generate simple equivalent fractions. (CCSS)
- Explain why the fractions are equivalent. (CCSS)
- Express whole numbers as fractions, and recognize fractions that are equivalent to whole numbers. (CCSS)
- Compare two fractions with the same numerator or the same denominator by reasoning about their size. (CCSS)
- Recognize that comparisons are valid only when the two fractions refer to the same whole. (CCSS)
- Record the results of comparisons with the symbols >, =, or <, and justify the conclusions. (CCSS)
ACTIVITIES AND INSTRUCTION
- ·Multimedia Teaser: This Originals animation aims to improve students' learning motivation. By the end, students will be presented with a thought-provoking question: Would you rather have half a cookie or a quarter? Students can use Class Swift to upload their audio responses.
- Multimedia Learning: Improve students' understanding of comparing fractions through an Originals animation. At the end of the video, assign a true or false quiz and check students’ comprehension immediately using Class Swift.
- Fractions Comparing Activity 1: Provide students with shapes representing different fractions. Have them use the push-and-response tool to color in the shapes to visually compare their sizes. Demonstrate the correct answers using the color fill tool on the whiteboard.
- Fractions Comparing Activity 2: Provide students with number lines and fractions to mark. Have them use the push-and-response tool to mark the corresponding points on the number lines. Compare the positions of the points to determine which fraction is greater or smaller.
- Multiple Choice Question: Create a multiple-choice quiz with questions about comparing fractions. Assign the quiz to students and use ClassSwift's student report to analyze their responses.
- Fractions Comparing Activity 3: Provide students with a game board where they must choose the path marked with the larger fraction. Have them click on the fraction to reveal the answer.
- Fraction Dice Dash: Divide the class into teams. Have each team roll the dice and move the corresponding number of spaces. If they land in a "Chance" space, they must answer a fraction comparison question correctly to stay in the space. The first team to reach the finish line wins.
