Fractions 08 : Adding and Subtracting Fractions Part 2
OVERVIEW
This content allows students to learn how to add and subtract fractions with different denominators. We provided 1 animation, 5 activities and 1 exit ticket in this content, all of them are multimedia-based. Teachers can keep their original lecture files while integrating with our content to create an interactive learning environment.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to:
- Develop a strong foundation in adding and subtracting fractions with unlike denominators through visual and interactive learning.
- Add and subtract fractions with unlike denominators (including mixed numbers) by replacing given fractions with equivalent fractions in such a way as to produce an equivalent sum or difference of fractions with like denominators. (CCSS)
- Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole, including cases of unlike denominators. (CCSS)
ACTIVITIES AND INSTRUCTION
- Multimedia Learning: Improve students' understanding of adding and subtracting fractions with different denominators through an Originals animation. At the end of the video, assign a quiz and check students’ comprehension immediately using Class Swift.
- Adding and Subtracting Activity 1: Generate random fractions by rolling two dice. Guide students in finding common denominators and adding the fractions.
- Adding and Subtracting Activity 2: Similar to Activity 1, generate random fractions by rolling two dice. Guide students in finding common denominators and subtracting the fractions.
- Adding and Subtracting Activity 3: Present students with four sets of equations, each containing a missing fraction represented by "ABCD". Guide students in using their knowledge of fraction operations to determine the missing value in each equation. Encourage them to show their work and explain their reasoning.
- Adding and Subtracting Activity 4: Students navigate a maze by solving fraction addition and subtraction problems at each intersection. The correct answer determines the path forward. Encourage students to show their work in the provided space.
- Real-world Application: Present students with word problems involving adding and subtracting fractions in real-life contexts. Guide students in identifying the necessary information, determining the correct operation, and solving the problem. Encourage them to show their work and label their answers with appropriate units.
- Fraction Pull-Off: Divide the class into two teams. Conduct a question-and-answer session using prepared fraction questions. The team that answers correctly earns a star. The team with the most stars at the end wins.
