Entity
Basic Elementary Math 12: Shapes- Sides, angles, and vertices
OVERVIEW
This content allows students to identify geometric shapes within everyday objects, and distinguish the sides, angles, and vertices of various shapes.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to:
- Understand the definitions of sides, angles, and vertices in geometric shapes.
- Practice counting sides, angles, and vertices for a variety of shapes.
- Identify geometric shapes in real-world objects.
- Develop spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills using tangrams.
ACTIVITIES AND INSTRUCTION
- Defining Shape Attributes: Provide students with audio explanations of the terms "sides," "angles," and "vertices."
- Identifying Shape Attributes: Present students with images of different shapes. Guide them in identifying and labeling the sides, angles, and vertices of each shape.
- Counting Shape Attributes: Provide students with images of various shapes and ask them to count and record the number of sides and angles for each shape.
- Shape Sorting: Provide students with shapes and boxes labeled with different numbers of angles. Guide them in sorting the shapes into the correct boxes.
- Advanced Shape Counting: Have students count and record the sides, angles, and vertices of each shape presented.
- Shape Challenge: Divide the class into teams. Have them roll the dice to move on the game board. When they land on a space, they must answer a shape-related question correctly. The first team to reach the finish line wins.
- Shape Detective: Have students search for objects in their surroundings and identify the geometric shapes they observe.
- Tangram Puzzle: Provide students with tangram pieces and target shape images. Guide them in using the tangram pieces to construct the target shapes.
- Tangram Animal Wonderland: Have students cut out the tangram pieces and use them to build their own animal creations. Encourage them to be creative and imaginative.
