Basic Elementary Math 07: Telling Time
OVERVIEW
This is the seventh chapter of the mathematics concept series. The content provides activities which allow students to get familiar with daily time expressions and practice telling time.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Students will be able to:
- Recognize and apply daily time expressions such as morning, afternoon and evening.
- Identify the parts of an analog clock.
- Tell time from an analog clock.
- Transfer between analog clock time and digital clock time.
- Understand the terms half past and o’clock.
ACTIVITIES AND INSTRUCTION
- Times of a day: Learn the times of a day. Teachers can demonstrate by dragging the names to the correct picture, or let the students practice by themselves.
- Drag-and-Drop Activity: What do you do in a day? Students can drag the activities into the time slot boxes.
- Build a clock: Put the parts of the clock in the correct place then discuss the question. Students can upload their answers to the whiteboard using ClassSwift.
- Half past and o’clock: Teachers can use the clock on the left for demonstration and guide students through the practice.
- Telling Time Activity 1: Roll the dice first, then move the hands of the clock to match with the given time.
- Telling Time Activity 2: Read the analog clocks and write down the times in digital clock form.
- Connect four: Divide the students into two teams, each team takes turns to put a finch in the grid if the clock is turned to the corresponding time. The first team to get a row of 4 finches wins!
