Fractions 05 : Adding and Subtracting Fractions Part 1

OVERVIEW

This content allows students to learn how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator. We provided 1 animation, 4 activities and 1 exit ticket in this content, all of them are multimedia-based. Teachers can keep their original lecture files while integrating with our content to create an interactive learning environment.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

Students will be able to:

  • Add and subtract fractions with like denominators and simplify their answers when necessary.
  • Enhance students’ flexibility in thinking about fractions by decomposing them into different equivalent forms.
  • Apply fraction addition and subtraction to real-world scenarios.
  • Understand a fraction a/b with a > 1 as a sum of fractions 1/b. (CCSS)
  • Understand addition and subtraction of fractions as joining and separating parts referring to the same whole. (CCSS)
  • Decompose a fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator in more than one way, recording each decomposition by an equation. (CCSS)
  • Add and subtract mixed numbers with like denominators. (CCSS)
  • Solve word problems involving addition and subtraction of fractions referring to the same whole and having like denominators. (CCSS)

ACTIVITIES AND INSTRUCTION

  • Multimedia Learning: Improve students' understanding of adding and subtracting fractions through an Originals animation. At the end of the video, assign a quiz and check students’ comprehension immediately using Class Swift.
  • Adding and Subtracting Activity 1: Guide students in using number lines to solve addition and subtraction problems involving fractions. Encourage them to visualize the movement along the number line to understand the concept better.
  • Adding and Subtracting Activity 2: Guide students in adding and subtracting fractions by combining or separating blocks.
  • Adding and Subtracting Activity 3: Present students with random fractions by screenshotting the gif. Encourage them to find multiple ways to decompose the given fraction into a sum of fractions with the same denominator.
  • Real-world Application: Provide students with word problems involving fractions. Guide them in identifying the relevant information, choosing the correct operation, and solving the problem.
  • Jeopardy: Divide the class into two teams. Prepare Jeopardy-style questions covering various aspects of fraction addition and subtraction. Allow teams to take turns answering questions. Award points for correct answers.
